Snapchat is gearing up for their latest version of their Spectacle series with the Spectacle 3. If you haven’t been following on the Spectacle 1 and 2 releases, then the easiest way to sum up things is that they haven’t been doing good in the sales department.

However, Snap Inc. is not ready to throw in the towel as the company has put in some nice upgrades to the Spectacles 3 to make it a crowd pleaser. And we can clearly see that the company has been watching the overall trend of the industry very closely as the Spectacles 3 comes with AR support. Now the glasses don’t just record videos for you to posts, it also overlays generated graphics on to those videos. However, the price may put some people off because the Spectacle 3 is about $150 costlier than its predecessor, the Spectacles 2.

Spectacles 3 Has AR, But It Is  Implemented Differently

Now when we say the Spectacles 3 has AR, don’t think to the levels of Google Glass or HoloLens as the Spectacle 3 cannot render graphics in real time. What it will possibly do is add AR elements to the videos that you shot with the two cameras housed at the top corners of the spectacles. Yes, the spectacles 3 has two cameras integrated with the frame, which is again, a step up from the Spectacles 2, which only had one camera. The perk is that since the cameras are at a distance with each other, the spectacles 3 can shoot 3D images.

We are yet to determine whether these two improvements can solely drive up the Spectacles 3 which is slated to release near the end of 2018. Then again, one can argue that Snap Inc. is playing is playing it safe here as there will be only 24,000 pairs produced.

The company hopes that their camera tech will bring the userbase back to the platform as their main competitor, Instagram, has been doing very well in terms of getting more active users on a daily basis. Will the Spectacles 3 bring in more users or is it something that Snapchat actually needs now? 2019 will tell us the rest!
