Facebook’s social hangout VR app, Spaces, is now available for the HTC Vive, adding cross-platform functionality to the platform for the first time. Users can finally hang out with their friends on both the Vive and the Oculus Rift.

“This is our first expansion onto a new platform…”,  said Rachel Franklin, Head of Social VR at Facebook in an announcement, “We’re working to bring Facebook Spaces to even more VR platforms and devices in the future, so stay tuned.”

In the new app, Vive owners will have access to all the features as the Rift version including avatars, Facebook photos and 360 videos, games and more.

Facebook made it’s bet on social VR earlier this year with the unveiling of Spaces. The VR app allows users to use the best features of the social network, like video calling, in VR space, letting them spend time with friends and family. Additionally, it lets them watch 360° videos, live stream videos and draw in a 3D space.

Later, the ‘Bait! Arctic Open’ game was introduced that made networking on VR even more addicting than it was before. The mini-game lets you compete against your friends in a fishing experience.

Facebook has also expressed interest in having third-party developers create apps and games for the social VR platform.

The app shows a lot of promise, changing the way we interact with Facebook. Just few days ago twitter introduced its augmented reality app that allowed users to view tweets on a three dimensional grid. It is only a matter of time before social networking on extended realities becomes a convention. Though it is interesting to observe which of the two ways, AR or VR will be the ultimate networking tool.
