The futuristic move from Shopify attracted a lot of attention including Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook. Augmented Reality, the technology that is used in the famous Pokemon GO game, makes virtual things appear right in front of you by using your phone’s camera app and make things look realistic like it is actually there.
“I believe that AR is the most profound technology of the future”said Apple’s CEO Tim Cook about how Augmented Reality could be the future of technology. This comes as no surprise, as according to a study conducted by Statista, the Augmented and Virtual Reality markets are likely to hit US$215 Billion by 2021.
Last year, with the launch of ARKit for iOS 11 by Apple, Tim Cook called it as their “first step” towards making AR a mainstream experience for Apple users.Shopify’s CEO, Tobias Lutke decided to integrate AR into their application with the help of Apple’s ARKit and came up with a whole new futuristic application.
Through this new Shopify application, users would be able to see the products such as housewares, furniture or other decorative pieces virtually just by pointing their camera towards the places in their house where they would put those items after buying. This will provide a great user experience for many people and cater them with the ability to try those out before actually buying them.
Making a surprise visit to the Shopify’s headquarters, Tim Cook praised Shopify’s developers for this great effort by bringing the Augmented Reality to the Shopify app, becoming the first ever eCommerce platform to do so. Cook said he’s a “big fan” of Shopify. “I love the fact that their focus is on democratizing technology for entrepreneurs that are largely artisans and bringing their products to market so that these merchants can focus on what they are great at,”
While Shopify’s Augmented Reality feature is still in the testing phase, it is just the beginning of this astonishing technology and the partnership between Apple and Shopify has a long way to go in future.
