Computer-generated graphics have come a long way and we see how they are so realistic nowadays with the help of modern games. Since the same technology is used to create VR, when you put on the helmet, the virtual reality is not that much virtual anymore.
And we have an example for that very statement, courtesy of the YouTuber ricardogonhin. He let his friend use a VR headset that was simulating a content where the user has a utility belt with a grenade attached to it. Remember, everything is virtual. The user gets to experience it with the VR headset and the respective controllers.
Ricardogonhin’s friend tried to pull the grenade out of the belt but instead, she accidentally pulled on the pin. Ricardogonhin and another friend were watching this through a monitor that helps them see what the VR user sees. As soon as the VR user pulled out the pin, Ricardogonhin and his friend shouted ‘No! No! She just threw it’.
The VR user panicked and thought it was the real deal. She tried to run away, but at that instant, she forgot that what she was seeing was a rendering and ran straight to a wall. Do not worry, nothing happened to her because the wall was in close proximity, but it shows how our brain may perceive a virtual rendering as a real one, given the right quality.
For quality immersive experiences, VR is certainly on the right route! And no, a virtual grenade won’t do anything to you!
