The latest company to bite the bullet is Facebook as it has decided to build its very own augmented reality glasses. It is no secret that Facebook owns Oculus, which means that this social media giant already had its feet in the water and was already invested in the technology of virtual reality. Now, Facebook has also confirmed that it is currently working on building its own augmented reality glasses.
As boisterously commented by Ficus Kirkpatrick, the head of the Augmented Reality division of Facebook, “Yeah! Well, of course, we’re working on it. We are building hardware products. We’re going forward on this . . . We want to see those glasses come into reality, and I think we want to play our part in helping to bring them there.”

According to the affirmations of Kirkpatrick, this development in the company is indeed a rather fascinating vision to have for this social media platform. Facebook has gone through its fair share of controversies, the latest being the security breaches consisting of the personal data of its countless users.
Facebook’s very first in-house hardware known as the Facebook Portal was a smart camera with voice activation and a touchscreen display that was meant to help users communicate with their loved ones. However, it received a somewhat chilly reception from users in the tech industry. This piece of hardware did not necessarily do well upon its launch. Therefore, tech gurus and industry experts are finding it hard to imagine this Facebook camera doing well in the market. Although these AR glasses advertise and promise the users the ability to track people anywhere in a room, the lousy track record of Facebook does not really have people excited about their new product.
Augmented Reality glasses entail a certain level of security breach into our personal lives. Due to this, Facebook now has added pressure to gain that kind of trust from the users for this new product to do well in the market. Mark Zuckerberg has been quite vocal about AR being the ultimate milestone in the future of the company. However, it is too early to predict just how well these AR glasses will do once they are launched.
