Many VR companies around the world have tried and failed to create a Virtual Reality auditorium that grips the fancy of VR fans worldwide. In this context, a lot of money, as well as time, has been spent pursuing this quest of designing a social VR space like no other. Now, after quite a bit of time, it seems that Against Gravity has achieved in doing just that!
Against Gravity’s Rec Room can definitely be called a super creative approach to creating a platform where users wearing VR headsets can also communicate and interact with one another.
As shared by CEO Nick Fajt, “I think a direction that we’re actually excited about is that we want to let the users creating some of this content charge tokens to play them. I think that’s one that we’re kind of on the cusp of doing and we’re hoping to get that out later this year.”
The developer of Rec Room, Against Gravity, has now raised funds of $24 million by Index Ventures and Sequoia. It is pertinent to mention here that a few years ago, the company raised $5 million which now brings its total funding to a whopping $29 million. With this exorbitant investment, Rec Room has definitely created a space for itself in the room of millions.
In 2016, Rec Room was definitely a work in progress as although it had some great features; it also showcased a lot of promise and room for improvement. In 2019, Rec Room has evolved into a vibrant social world with a lot of new attributes. It has gone through a number of updates wherein users can now design custom environments for their favorite avatars and, of course, talk to their fellow VR fanatics in a central hub-kind of place.
Fajt also shares, “We’ve done about 5 percent of what we want to do so far. We feel like VR and AR are inevitable. I don’t know if that’s two years from now or 10 years from now, but there’s a ton of things that we can do in the interim that takes our platform and our toolset a little bit closer.”
This new update in the Rec Room is a huge development, not just for Against Gravity but a lot of developers who wish to create and share their content on a social platform. This platform seems quite accessible, but as all innovations, the proof will be in the pudding!
