Many of you might be familiar with Samsung’s flagship range of VR headsets named “Odyssey”. Now Samsung is getting ready to refresh the line up with a new device called the HMD Odyssey+. There hasn’t been any official announcement from Samsung but we can infer that the launch might happen sooner than later. Every bit of information we have now was leaked by RoadtoVR and it sure looks promising.
To start things off, the new Samsung VR headset inherits many technical aspects from its predecessor (now retails for 400$) and that’s a good thing because Samsung is staying with the tried and tested method here. So right of the bat we that the odyssey+ with sport two 3.5 inch AMOLED screen and both can be clocked up to 90Hz. the screens will have 1440×1600 resolution respectively and combine together to give the user 110 degrees of field of view.
Comfort wise, Samsung has done some engineering changes to give the user a more comfortable experience while wearing the headset and the AKG tuned speakers will be a treat to the ears for sure. The design changes around the nose and eye areas are a welcoming change as the original Odyssey was criticized for bad airflow resulting in foggy eye lenses and sweat buildup under prolonged use.
Since the new Samsung VR headset has been certified under Microsoft’s Mixed Reality headsets, you can rest assured that it will support windows based VR applications. With the help of inside-out tracking technology, the users will be able to get more out of their VR experience.
Samsung is making two notable changes this year with the addition of Steam VR compatibility and Bluetooth connectivity. The steam VR support ensures that the device will cater to not just windows apps but also for Steam apps. It significantly increases the headset’s appeal to users. The multi-platform support of Odyssey+ is going to be the biggest sales pitch for the Samsung’s latest flagship VR.
The Bluetooth technology that the device has given it an edge over the competition as it means that peripherals can be connected directly to the device rather than requiring additional wires. Again, we are seeing Odyssey+ being more customer friendly.
As for the official launch, we can hope to see it in a few months’ time.
