This New AR System Enables Anyone to Be a Makeshift Doctor!

The level of anxiety that the inexperienced will undergo in an event where he/she has to perform first aid or any medical procedures to save another’s life is beyond comprehension. In most cases, the anxiety grows into panic and soon, he/she will be frozen at the moment where every second matter. As a result of this panic attack, there have been many incidences where many have lost their lives where they could have had a fighting chance.
In today’s world, medical help is always a call away. However, what about scenarios where the medical team is in short. Imagine a calamity where you had been cut off from the rest of the world and need to save somebody? Juan Wachs, professor of engineering at Purdue also had this frightening thought in mind, and he and his team decided to do something about it.
They based their solution on an AR platform and it couldn’t be more convenient! The idea behind their invention is to help inexperienced people perform simple/complex medical procedures by receiving remote assistance from a verified doctor. The team developed an AR helmet that a user can wear and with AR tech, the instructions will be shown in real time with depth effect. Hence, the user will have a real-time guide, courtesy of a professional doctor, with special awareness. Also, the doctor will have a real-time view of what the user is performing or whether he/she is sticking to the provided guidelines.
The team also plans to use a drone that will hover above the scene, giving doctors another angle to observe the subject and their surroundings. Juan Wachs emphasizes that technology especially helps in times of war and natural calamities.
This approach to AR is truly impressive as the end goal here is to save a human life. Even an amateur can dawn the role of an emergency medical support personnel, where they can stay strong amidst the pressure of the moment as they will have a professional doctor demonstrating the procedures to them.
The U.S Department of Defense is amongst the varied supporters that Juan and his team have for this research. A simulated military drill in going to take place in Virginia so test out the real world performance of this tech.
